‘Hope for Kids’ Group Gets New Lease of Life

"Hope for Kids": A Phoenix Reborn to Light the Path for Young Lives

A Renewed Vision

In an emotionally charged ceremony at the luxurious Four Seasons Resort, the Cancer Concern Association (CCA) rekindled the flames of ‘Hope for Kids,’ a sanctuary for children aged 7-16, who are navigating the complex emotional landscape shaped by cancer’s impact on their families.

Rooted in Compassion

The group was originally conceived by Minister Patricia Francourt and Bishop French Chang Him in the 2018/2019 period. Minister Francourt, accompanied by Bishop French, reflected on the sobering reality that catalyzed the inception of ‘Hope for Kids’: a growing number of children bereft of parents or siblings due to cancer.

A Therapeutic Journey

“Starting small in a humble church at Glacis, we partnered with the Ministry of Education to identify the children in need,” said Minister Francourt. “Our first major initiative was a three-day therapy program on Silhouette Island, with the involvement of mentors and educators.”

The Silence of Loss and the Power of Connection

Francourt highlighted the initial difficulty children faced in articulating their grief but also emphasized how small group settings helped them open up. “During the pandemic, we couldn’t be physically present, but someone from CCA ensured they were not emotionally isolated,” she added.

A Long-Awaited Reunion

Reconnecting with these young souls after two years was a poignant moment for the organizers. “Life has moved on for these children—some are working now. The time has come to regroup and offer therapeutic interventions, as the need is still significantly high,” observed Minister Francourt.

The Fabric of Community and Success

“The beauty of ‘Hope for Kids’ lies in its ability to be more than just a support group. It has been a launchpad for these children, helping them integrate into families and society, and equipping those entering the labor market with new skills,” Francourt noted.

A Harmonious Partnership

Renan Astolpho, the new General Manager of Four Seasons, expressed the hotel’s eagerness to be part of this virtuous cycle. “We are committed to the community and find ‘Hope for Kids’ an exemplary cause to associate with, especially during the festive season,” he said.

An Open Invitation

Dinaz Van Lans, Chairperson of CCA, extended a warm invitation to other children grappling with similar experiences. “We aim to provide grief counseling and mentorship. Contrary to what many children fear, a cancer diagnosis in the family doesn’t spell automatic doom. ‘Hope for Kids’ is here to guide them through these tough times,” she affirmed.

Expanding Horizons

Ms. Van Lans also revealed plans to extend the program to children from Praslin and La Digue.

An Afternoon to Remember

The event concluded with a lavish lunch and a series of engaging activities organized by the Four Seasons Resort. Father Christmas himself made an appearance, ensuring that every child went home with a gift.
