October, globally recognized as ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month,’ was marked by a series of deeply moving and educational activities across the Seychelles. While Mahé witnessed the success of the ‘Annual Breast Cancer Beach Walk,’ Praslin was equally abuzz with its own poignant event—the ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, Praise, and Worship.’
Over 50 participants donned pink attire for the occasion, assembling at the Grand Anse clinic. The procession then made its way to St Mathew’s Church. Though the walk was short in distance, it was monumental in emotional depth. Participants, including cancer patients and survivors, walked in reverential silence, their hearts heavy with prayer and reflection.
Upon arrival at the church, the atmosphere shifted to one of ‘Praise and Worship,’ complemented by an insightful talk on breast cancer screening from nurse Sylvie Bellard. Her session was not just educational but also highly interactive, engaging a receptive congregation.
Mrs. Bellard emphasized the life-saving power of regular screenings and early detection. She also delved into the role of a balanced diet and regular exercise in maintaining overall health.
In a significant call to action, Bellard implored the women in attendance to extend the dialogue about cancer to the men in their lives, noting the sparse male presence at the event.
A deeply touching moment came when attendees lit candles—each flame a prayer for those battling cancer and a tribute to those who had succumbed to it.
Tasiana Bossy, Chairperson of the Cancer Concern Association’s Praslin branch, concluded the event with heartfelt thanks and a call for ongoing community support.
“Cancer doesn’t just affect the patient; it reverberates through the entire family, often leaving emotional scars. Let’s extend our hands and hearts to support each other—whether it’s a family member or a colleague going through this ordeal. Remember, even the smallest gesture can bring immense comfort in such trying times,” shared Mrs. Bossy.
