The scenic grounds of Four Seasons Seychelles came alive with energy and purpose on Sunday, February 18, 2024, as the annual Run for Hope fundraising event, held in partnership with the Cancer Concern Association (CCA), successfully raised vital funds and awareness for cancer research.
The event drew a diverse crowd, including professional runners, enthusiastic walkers, children, resort staff, and notable attendees like Seychelles’ Education Minister, Dr. Justin Valentin, who showcased his support by participating in the run. In the weeks leading up to the event, resort staff were actively involved in various charity fundraising activities, demonstrating a strong commitment to the cause.
The Run for Hope initiative is inspired by the remarkable story of Terry Fox, a young athlete who, after losing his leg to bone cancer, embarked on an extraordinary journey in 1980, running 5,374 kilometers (3,340 miles) across Canada to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Although Terry succumbed to his illness the following year, his legacy continues to inspire countless individuals and events worldwide.
Motivated by Terry’s bravery, Four Seasons Founder Isadore Sharp pledged to support cancer research, galvanizing other executives to join this noble cause. The inaugural Terry Fox Run was organized in 1981 by Sharp and the Fox family, and for over four decades, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts globally have hosted events to support local cancer research and care.
This year’s Run for Hope at Four Seasons Seychelles surpassed expectations, raising an impressive R62,500. The resort’s general manager, Renan Astolpho, proudly presented the donation to CCA Chairperson Dinaz Van Der Lanz, underscoring the community’s dedication to combating cancer.
The success of the Run for Hope was made possible by the unwavering support and participation of all attendees. Their contributions not only aid in spreading awareness and promoting healthier lifestyles but also directly support those affected by cancer.
Originally scheduled for December 2023, the run was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, making the successful February event even more significant. The next Run for Hope is slated for the fourth quarter of 2024, promising another opportunity for the community to unite in the fight against cancer.
